Distributed & Community Wind Events at WINDPOWER2012

AWEA has expanded the Project Siting Track at WINDPOWER 2012 and is providing additional activities for attendees interested in distributed and community wind this year in Atlanta, GA. See below under "Dedicated Distributed Wind & Community Wind Events."

The growing popularity of community wind projects has made it a key asset to the wind energy industry, creating new jobs within the field and providing neighborhood purpose and sustainability. The market stimulus that community and distributed wind projects have created is reflected in our national economy and portrays both strength and value.

These three sessions make up the main Distributed Wind and Community Wind sessions at WINDPOWER 2012 and will take place on Monday, June 4th in Atlanta, GA:

Community Wind: A Diversified and Promising Sector
(10:30 am - 12:00 pm, Monday, June 4th)
The appeal and potential of community wind is becoming more evident. With a recent push in policy, development expertise, and collaboration from many stakeholders, community wind has an increasingly favorable future. These wind projects bring more jobs and economic stimulus to a community, play a significant role in creating a shared sense of local sustainability, and pave the way for community support that may lead to larger wind projects. This session will explore the many facets of community wind, and offer expert answers to this expanding industry's pressing questions.

Economic Value of Distributed Wind
(1:30 pm - 3:00 pm, Monday, June 4th)
Distributed wind possesses a great amount of economic value and presents a series of opportunities within several sectors and programs. Panelists detail the strengths and weaknesses as well as the successes and challenges being faced by distributed wind within the agricultural and educational sectors, in preparing state and federal grant applications, and within the general wind market. Specific attention is given to risk management and cutting utility costs within the agricultural sector, new trends involving international certification and reciprocity, requirements for certification by incentive programs, and the ongoing project development and academic activities of the Arizona Wind for Schools project’s work with Native American schools.

Real World Impacts of Distributed Wind
(3:30 pm - 5:00 pm, Monday, June 4th)
This session demonstrates the strength and value that Distributed Wind brings to our economy, and its contribution to the entire wind market. Using real world examples, expert speakers examine the importance of distributed wind's role in emerging and domestic markets, and best practices in financing projects and vendor partnerships.
Of special interest, the session assesses the power of the federal market and the steps that are being taken to embrace wind within our armed forces.
